Sophie Cabot Black was born in 1958 in New York City and raised
on a small farm in New England. She studied at Marlboro College
and Columbia University. Her work has appeared in various anthologies,
including More Light: Father & Daughter Poems and
The Best American Poetry 1993 (editor: Louise Gluck). Her
awards include the Grolier Poetry Prize (1988), the John Masefield
Award from the Poetry Society of America, and the Emerging Poets
Award from Judith's Room (1990). She has received fellowships
from the MacDowell Colony, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown,
and the Bunting Institute. The Misunderstanding of Nature,
her first collection of poems, was published by Graywolf Press
in 1994. Sophie Cabot Black lives in New York City.
